Founded in 2005 by Christine Wambui, Hope for Orphans Rescue Centre (HOREC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
HOREC provides critical care, shelter, education, and support to children who cannot access government-led HIV/AIDS programs, offering them a lifeline of hope and a brighter future
Christine’s Vision: The Birth of HOREC
Christine’s journey began with her volunteer work in Nairobi’s slums, caring for women living with HIV/AIDS. Witnessing the neglect and abuse endured by children orphaned by the epidemic, she felt compelled to act. Despite her repeated appeals to have these children included in existing programs, help did not come.
As abuse cases rose, Christine made the courageous decision to rescue these children herself, welcoming them into her own home. This decision came at great personal cost—she closed her beauty salon to dedicate her life to the children.
Despite community stigma and limited resources, she pressed on, renting a small room to provide shelter for the girls she had rescued and enlisting a volunteer housemother to help care for them.
